School Learning is Old-fashioned

Development in the world has never stopped and it is a continuous process that takes place on a daily basis. Lastly, digitalization is taking over many important aspects of our lives such as education. Yet, the educational system and, mainly, schools should be able to adapt to the change and the matters that developments impose on us. Schools have become old-fashioned because the methods followed and the content is not updated and not developing at the same pace as the development occurs in society. Therefore, the old-fashioned school system should be reinvented to become more coherent with the new digital era.

Basically, schools are still teaching the same content that was taught at schools decades ago. This content is not compatible with the new developments and consequently, does not achieve the desired outcome. Schools are still teaching students impractical matters that can not be used in real life nor do they address the development in the modern world. Such a good example is maths. That is, students are taught maths but never taught how to use maths in real life other than addition، subtraction, or basic mathematical calculations.

Furthermore, teaching the old-fashioned way and subjects that do not originate from the core of the development in the new digital era, will necessarily result in an educational system that does not address the newly emerging concerns in the world such as sustainability or the issues that form our new world such as microeconomics. This influences society in the long term as students are the ones who will be forming modern society in the future. In this way, there is no connection between what is happening in the world and who graduates from school.

However, the matter is even criticized in terms of the modernization of the educational system. That is, those who are against the modernization of learning at schools claim that modern ways are not effective in terms of learning discipline for students. This may seem right but the fact is that this is a different question than the content of learning. It is more connected to which approach schools follow. Schools can still modernize learning while at the same time teaching students discipline and order.

Finally, the world is now going through an interesting phase of development as everything is becoming digital. Learning at schools should adapt to the development so students which are the future generation would be able to address the issues that are accompanied by the development that is occurring in our world.
