Political correctness is a term that is often related to matters that are politically loaded and include the use of language or policies in such a manner to avoid offense to others. However, the term has been debated widely on whether it constitutes a limitation on the freedom of speech or if it is necessary to avoid being offensive or to avoid disadvantages that can be caused to certain individuals in society. Well, both opinions are worth exploring and understanding.
There are several matters in society that are important to discuss even if they can be perceived as disadvantageous for certain people. For example, statistics that show a certain minority are overrepresented in criminal statistics are necessary to tackle criminal behaviors in society. Yet, that does not mean that we need to accuse this minority or the individuals of this minority of all crimes that take place in society. Therefore, the term, political correctness, is necessary to illustrate the matter without being offensive to them.
On the other hand, there is a certain level or a certain context where we should mention those important matters. That is to say, we should never be able to express our ideas, mainly on these important societal issues or phenomena. This right should never be infringed by anyone as it is among the grounds of democracy. In simpler words, it is a combination and a balance of what we say and how we say it considering that all people are equal.
However, this should never be exaggerated to a level where the freedom of expressing thoughts and ideas can constitute a constant offense against certain individuals. Otherwise, the matter can turn into a negative social phenomenon that needs to be tackled to achieve equality.
Finally, political correctness is a necessary tool in society but one should never exaggerate or overvalue its importance. It is important to be able to discuss important matters in society with no limitations but it is as important as equality and how people should be treated equally without direct or unnecessary offensive statements. Therefore, we should find the balance between freedom of speech and the matter of equality to achieve an ideal situation in our democracy.
