The excerpt is about captain Whalley who was the captain of Sofala. In the sea, he gets an order to change the route. His ship, Sofala, is old enough to know the routes in the sea better than the captain himself and better than the other men who are working on it. Captain Whalley and Sofala have a routine course in which they travel through to collect cargo from the islands before they return. This is not a very interesting business for such an experienced sailor as captain Whalley. Captain Whalley is a very experienced sailor with vast experience from several firms and several ships including own ships. He even found a new Island which he named after himself. Despite this wide experience from the sea, he had been left behind with no use of his own experience.

The WriterJoseph Conrad is a Polish-English writer most famous for his early modernism. He lived between 1857-1924. His debut novel “Almayer’s Folly” was published in 1895. John Glasworthy – The FreelandsThe excerpt is about Felix Freeland who is an author with a slightly restricted view on society and compromising approach to what he wants and what is accepted. The author describes the road after visiting his brother Morton Freeland. Mr.Freeland thought that the country was on its way to fall. He believed that the situation is not good in the country and industrialism and officialism has taken over the country. While in Hyde park, Mr.Freeland meets a demonstration of younger people. He started thinking again that the country is in a bad way. Then, he hurried up and home at his office while thinking he heard the car of his brother, Stanley Freeland. Stanley has been stopped twice for breaching the speed limits, but not according to Stanely. Felix Freeland felt a stronger feeling this time that the country is being eaten up by industrialism and officialism. The WriterJohn Glasworthy is an English author, novelist and playwright. He lived between 1867-1933. His debut work was published in 1897 under the pen name John Sinjohn. However, he is also among the first modernist writers. ComparisonBoth excerpts are interesting to listen to despite the hard and old language that is used. Most interestingly is that both handle the issue of modernism in different ways. In Conrad’s work, modernism is represented by the experienced sailor who has been left behind as he never updated his experiences and never adapted the new system. On the contrary, in Glasworthy’s work, the author describes the new era led by the youngsters who were demonstrating in Hyde park. Through a restrictive view on the society by the main character, Mr.Freeland, illustrates the author a modern view on, at that time, on how laws are issued and the role of industrialism.
