A Dream of America is a short novella written by Dee Phillips and published in 2014. The novella describes the story of two immigrants to the new land of dreams, America. The story, A Dream of America is about Maria and her brother Milek who decide to leave their village in Poland and immigrate to America on a ship. Back home, they were so poor that others gave them money for the journey.
They started the journey and got on the ship. They were together with many other people. The journey was long and there were many people. One morning, they could see The Statue of Liberty from the ship. They became so happy and enthusiastic about the new land and starting the new life of their dreams.
They were taken together with thousands of immigrants to Ellis Island in New York to get a medical inspection. Maria passed while Milek did not pass the inspection because he was sick or had a disease. He was marked with chalk on the coat that Maria sewed for him. Maria wanted to go back with Milek to Poland but he refused and told her to start her new life of dreams in America. They will send him back. Maria gave him all her money or most of it. She was left with not enough money to buy the train ticket that would take her to her husband Leo at the farm where he was working.
She stayed in the city. She could find a room on the top of one building. There was a polish woman who helped her to find a job at a factory. She started sewing at the factory. Maria worked 12 hours a day every day. It was hard but she got a roof over her and enough food. She saved even money, a dollar each week. One day, her husband Leo, who traveled to America before Maria and was working there at a farm, could come to her. Maria was so happy when she saw him. They lived together with enough food and a roof over their heads.
