Democracy has no clear definition or exact terms that can explain what it is. Democracy is rather a loose concept that can include many aspects and, to an extent, each state has its very own democratic experience. On the contrary, there are distinctive features that characterize democracies and, to an extent, the foundation of each democratic state. This applies as well to the United States of America which is considered among the leading democracies in the world. Whether we agree with this matter, the American democracy, or if we are against it, still America is a democratic state and an example of how democracy can be applied in all other states.
Mainly, the United States of America is a country that is characterized by the rule of law in all aspects of life. In simpler words, this includes the equality of all individuals in the society before the law and regulations regardless of who they are or their position in society. That is, courts are independent of the political sphere and apply the law according to law texts and not according to political wills. An obvious example of this matter is the Second Amendment of the American constitution about the right to bear arms. This law has been discussed and debated for decades now and no one could yet infringe this constitutional right as the law text about the matter is clear about this right.
Furthermore, the United States of America is characterized by a free press and media that can deliver what people think about different matters. This reflects even strong personal and political freedoms in expressing thoughts and mobilizing into a certain political direction based on a certain ideology. That is, the margin of freedom is actually very wide that literally anyone can express their thoughts in whatever direction or based on whatever political ideology. Moreover, everyone can literally criticize those in power or their politics with almost no restrictions so far it is compliant with prevailing laws.
Despite these facts, not everyone agrees with those democratic values in the US and some would not consider the US a democratic country. Some people might argue against the fact that the US is a well-established democracy because of different reasons such as the capitalistic prevailing approach in American society or because of the different societal matters that reflect upon injustice and iniquity. Yet, those matters can negatively influence democracy but the American democracy in the core still is so strong and characterizes all aspects of the political and societal aspects of life there. In other words, people still own the final word and have the final decision about who to come into power and how they should use this power.
American democracy is so strong that it is an undeniable fact. This is because all democratic characteristics are there to reflect upon a strong democratic state. American democracy shares the same characteristics that are prevailing in other democratic countries as the democratic values are almost the same everywhere with slightly small and marginal differences in the structure or in how democracy is organized in each country. Finally, American democracy is, exactly like all other democracies, about the power of people who have the final word and final decision on how the state should be run and how people in powerful positions can use their powers.
